Obituary
Our beloved mother, Mildred (nee Vasko) Calek, passed away peacefully in her home in LaGrange on June 19, 2022, just days before her 91st birthday. Devoted wife of the late Joseph Calek, she is survived by her daughters Anne (David Lockery) Calek, Alice (Richard, retired CFD) Dory, and her son Joe Calek; loving grandmother of Matt (fiancée Alyssa) and Dan Dory (fiancée Morgan), Allison and Andrew Calek; dear sister of the late Jerry (late Gloria) Vasko; fond aunt of Buddy, Debra, Laura, Joel, and the late Paul. She will be especially missed by her grand and great grand-dogs/cats Freyja, Auri, Halas, Daisy, Chloe, and Salem. Mildred grew up in Chicago and North Judson, Indiana and raised her family in Berwyn, later moving to North Riverside. She was a PTA volunteer, Girl Scout leader, deacon for her church, and active member of the CSA and quilting club. While working full-time as a secretary, she earned her Associates degree. She made quilts for veterans at Hines VA Hospital and baked meals for PADS. She learned how to upholster, and after retiring, took exercise, yoga, and Czech school classes, and was her husband’s caregiver for 20 years after he suffered a stroke. She sewed, gardened, traveled throughout the US, New Zealand, and Australia, was an avid reader, and worked diligently every day on crossword puzzles until she passed away. She was a friend to many and will always be remembered for her generosity, compassion, and determination. She lived life to its fullest with grace and dignity and will be dearly missed.
Visitation Sunday, June 26, 2022, 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Monday, June 27, 2022, 10 A.M. to Time of Service 10:30 A.M. at Hitzeman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 9445 West 31st Street, Brookfield, IL 60513.
Interment Private Woodlawn Cemetery.
