Obituary


Howard S. Cannon, passed suddenly on January 14, 2009. Mr. Cannon, 82, was born in Chicago, IL on September 23,1926 to William A. & Margaret (Suckling) Cannon. He served in the US Air Force from August 1944 thru December 1946, including a year on Okinawa. After his military service, he received a BS in Metallurgy from Carnegie Mellon University in 1950. Howard later was awarded a MS and Ph.D. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1953. He worked in several industrial research Labs, including more than twenty years at the Continental Can Research Center in Chicago. He spent five years as Vice President of Research for Rasselstein Steel in Andernach, Germany. This was followed by five years as head of the Office of Advanced Engineering Studies for the University of Illinois with offices in Rockford and DuPage County. While at U of I, he established HSC Associates, Inc, an engineering consulting company that he continued to operate after he retired from U of I in 1989. He was an active member of Sigma Xi and the Metallurgical Technical Societies American Society of Metallurgists & AIME for over fifty years. While in Chicago, he was very active in Christian Foundations for Ministry, Cana Conferences and various local church activities. In Rockford, he was active in SCORE, the ASM local chapter, Contact, and Rock Valley College's Center for Learning in Retirement. Beloved husband of the late Helen Cannon, nee Werder; loving father of, Michol (Tom) Schofield, Deborah (Bob) Hitzeman, Tim (Suze) Cannon, Amy (Tom) Pfeiler, and Clare (Paul) Finer; eleven grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, William. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, January 31st 2009, 10 A.M. at Saint Louise de Marillac, 30th and Raymond ,LaGrange Park, IL 60526.
