Eileen Grimmer, nee Hargrove

Eileen Grimmer

Eileen Grimmer, nee Hargrove, age 92 of LaGrange Park, formerly of Hickory Hills. Beloved wife of the late Roman H. “Jerry” Grimmer; loving mother of Kathy (the late Tom) Welch, John (Jeanne) Grimmer, Ralph (Kim) and Marie (Donna) Grimmer; dear grandmother of Jennifer Grimmer, Rachel (Robert) Campbell, Kimberly (Adam) Wilson, Jessica (Matt) Olson, Julia Welch, Heather (Matt) Thayer, Christy Welch, Ryan Grimmer and Kennedy Gram Grimmer; great grandmother of Charlotte Campbell and Parker Wilson; sister of Adrienne (Bernard) Girod;  aunt and cousin of beloved family in the U.S. and Ireland.

Eileen was a graduate of the University of Chicago. After college, she worked for Catholic Charities and the Social Security Administration. She married Jerry, who would be her devoted partner for over 50 years, and kept busy with her growing family. In her “spare” time she volunteered at St. Patricia Church and school and for other activities in Hickory Hills, Illinois.

As Eileen’s children got older, she obtained her teaching certificate, and began her long career in elementary education. She taught for over 20 years in School District 117 in Palos Hills, Illinois, and served on the school board for over a decade after retirement. She was a learner as well as a teacher, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Illinois. She was active in the Illinois Education Association (IEA) while teaching, and in the IEA Retired afterwards.

Eileen enjoyed boating on Lake Michigan with friends and family. She loved to travel, especially visiting with her sister Adrienne, escaping the Chicago winters to Florida with children and grandchildren, and rekindling connections with her relatives in Ireland.

After downsizing the family home, Eileen and Jerry moved to Plymouth Place in LaGrange Park, Illinois. She enjoyed many years of new activities and treasured friendships there.

A celebration of Eileen’s life will be held in Dole Hall, at Plymouth Place, 315 N. LaGrange Road, LaGrange Park, IL on November 27th.  It will include a service from 1:30 to 2:15 PM, followed by refreshments and socializing until 3:30 PM.

Messages of Condolence

  1. Karen and Marc condolence:

Our hearts and prayers are with the entire Grimmer family. Eileen was a very special lady in which everyone admired. May she RIP with her beloved Jerry.

  2. Elizabeth brown condolence:

Eileen Grimmer was like a family member while growing up as neighbors in Hickory Hills. She was always listening to my stories or dreams as a child. When I became a Mother she helped me navigate the special education services through my daughter’s school. She went to a meeting with me at the school to make sure my daughter was receiving the correct help. I was so grateful. My daughter thrived after a few years of getting the extra help she needed. Mrs. Grimmer was a blessing in this life, and I’m positive she will be in her next.
    Sending love to family ❤️

  3. Janet Haisman condolence:
