Obituary

Allen W. Bernard, 76, of Brookfield, IL, passed away on November 15th. He is preceded in death by his parents, William J. Bernard and Helen (Krabec) Bernard, and his former wife, Linda.

Allen (Al) is the beloved father of Wendy (Steve) Dressel; grandfather of Jason Dressel and Eric Dressel; brother of Dale (Marianne) Bernard; uncle of Eric (Heather) Bernard and Michelle (Dwight) Williams.

Above all, Al loved his grandsons and enjoyed watching their childhood sporting events and traveling with them on many family vacations to Disney World. He also loved attending their school music programs and enjoyed volunteering at school fundraising events.

As a retired small business owner, Al enjoyed spending his time at the Brookfield Zoo, reading WW II books, walking his dog (Pepper) and volunteering at the Boys’ Club of Cicero, where he was a charter member in 1950, and was honored as Boy of the Year (1959-60). Al remained active as a volunteer at the Boys’ Club, primarily as a basketball referee and game room supervisor, throughout his entire life. He extended his commitment to the Boys’ Club community by also serving as a United Way Ambassador for many years.

Al also dedicated much of his time to volunteer activities in the community as a member of the Cicero-Berwyn Elks Lodge. He chaired the Holiday Food Drive for 10 years, volunteered in the Easter Bunny program, and also chaired the local Children’s Care program. For his hard work and dedication, he at one time earned the honor of Elk of the Year. Additionally, Al participated in fund raising events for the Kiwanis & Lions Clubs, volunteered for Judy Baar Topinka’s political campaign, and was a member of Cicero’s Special Events Committee.

Al was a veteran of the Illinois National Guard.
